College and Career Readiness Should Be Measuring Stick

Hammond:  Students need better preparation for their future

AUSTIN, TX— Today, Bill Hammond, CEO of the Texas Association of Business, urged the Texas Commission on Next Generation Assessments and Accountability to have a clear measure of whether students are graduating career or college ready.

“It is our belief that producing graduates who are career or college ready should be the core mission of our K-12 education system,” said Hammond.  “Getting children ready for a viable future, either through additional education or beginning a career where their employers are willing to train them should be the priority.  The goal must be getting these students into jobs where they will earn good wages and be a productive member of society.”

College or career readiness may not be the only measure of how campuses are doing, but Hammond said it should be a major factor.  “All of the members of the public should be able to ascertain how campuses are doing on that measure.  It should be crystal clear.”

Hammond is calling on the Commissioner of Education to include college and career readiness in the new A-F campus grading system.  “For a campus to do well a relatively high percentage of their student body should be on track to graduating career or college ready,” said Hammond.
